January was named for the Roman god Janus, known as the protector of gates and doorways who symbolize beginnings and endings. Janus is depicted with two faces, one looking into the past, the other with the ability to see into the future. What a fitting symbol for this first day of the year.

Named after latin term februum meaning ‘purification’ due to a purification ritual occurring on February 15th of the old lunar Roman calendar. February’s full moon is known as ‘Snow Moon’ to many northern Native Americans tribes, early American colonists referred to it as ‘Trapper’s Moon’ as February was the easiest time to trap beaver, fox and mink. February is Black History Month and American Heart Month.

Latin name Aprilis, derivation uncertain. Traditional etymology from verb aperire meaning ‘to open’. Anglo-Saxons named the month eastre-monap after goddess Eostre for whom the feast of the month is dedicated. According to “The Reckoning of Time” or De temporum ratione written 725 AD by Northumbrian monk, this is where the term Easter derived.
